DIALECTIC STUDENTS VISIT UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY

Philadelphia, PA – April 30, 2008

Bethel Prep’s Dialectic (Middle) School students enjoyed a rare opportunity to see their Omnibus studies come alive as they visited the Penn Museum this past Wednesday. They experienced guided tours through the Greek and the Etruscan-Roman exhibits, which correspond very nicely with the historical periods they are studying right now at Bethel Prep.

The evidence of their learning was apparent as they asked provoking questions of the guides that revealed a Christian perspective on the topics covered by the exhibits. Their discussions also revealed the benefits of studying culture from an integrated historical, literary, and theological perspective as students learn through the Omnibus program of study here at Bethel Prep.

An extra special opportunity was presented by the current exhibit Surviving in the museum’s anthropological area. I was thrilled as several students noticed the exhibit’s definition of evolution that appears at the very beginning of the exhibit was a circular definition and therefore a logical fallacy. This important lesson came from the students’ Logic studies.

Many thanks to our excellent chaperones/drivers for accompanying us. Watch for more pictures in next week’s Christian Heritage Journal.

CALIFORNIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SEEK DONATIONS

TO COVER THE BASICS

Los Angeles, CA – April, 2008

It appears the bottomless well of involuntary taxpayer support is not enough to promote the agenda of government-sponsored schools. Donations are now being solicited in many districts.

South Orange County families are being urged to donate $400 per student to save the jobs of 266 teachers in the Capistrano Unified School District.

Parents at Long Beach's Longfellow Elementary are among countless statewide who are launching fundraising foundations.

Bay Area parents launched a campaign featuring children standing in trash cans; the theme is "Public Education Is Too Valuable to Waste."

A free public school education is guaranteed by the state Constitution to every California child. But as districts grapple with proposed state funding cuts that could cause the layoffs of thousands of teachers and inflate class sizes, parents are being asked to dig deeper into their pocketbooks to help.

"Public education is free, but an excellent public education is not free at this point," said Janet Berry, president of the Davis Schools Foundation, which recently launched the Dollar-a-Day campaign, urging citizens of the city near Sacramento to donate $365 per child, grandchild or student acquaintance.

Public school district fundraising foundations were first formed after voter approval in 1978 of Proposition 13, which limited property tax increases and dramatically reduced school finances. Those groups have long helped parents in affluent areas enrich their children's public school educations in ways that include field trips, music classes and such expensive classroom equipment as digital cameras, scientific robots and laptops. Today, such groups are fighting to pay for the basics: teachers' jobs, manageable class sizes, nurses.

"It's gone beyond frills at this point," said David Wagman, president of the Peninsula Education Foundation, which is asking Palos Verdes parents for $200 per child to save the jobs of 59 teachers. PTAs and students are also holding fundraisers.

Before you consider donating to any school, investigate their agenda. Does the school’s philosophy align with your personal beliefs? Will your donation promote God-honoring learning?

A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT FROM A BETHEL PREP MOM

I just wanted to add another note of encouragement to you.

Micah was helping me in the snack stand this weekend at the baseball park.  I almost dropped over when I heard him say the change from a $5 for an order of $1.75 was $3.25 without even thinking.

He continued to add orders and give change correctly and quickly all evening.  This is not to toot Micah's horn.  When he was in public school he was headed to the Basic Skills class because his teacher didn't want to spend any extra time to teach.  His classmate's mom from the public school days was in the stand with us.  She told me time and time again her boys couldn't figure out what Micah was doing so quickly in his head on a piece of paper!
